Butterflies are insects.
Life Cycle of a Butterfly:
Butterflies have six legs.
Butterflies have a hard
outer skeleton (exoskeleton).
Butterflies have 3 body
sections:
Can you find the Head, Thorax, and Abdomen?
Butterflies have wings.
2 forewings (front) and 2 hind wings (back). The tiny scales attached to butterfly
wings give the wings their color.
Butterflies drink with a
long straw like tongue called a proboscis.
Butterflies lay eggs. Look at these different kind of butterfly
eggs: Black Swallowtail-
Hackberry Emperor
Cabbage White Butterfly

Orchard Swallowtail
Monarch
Long Tailed Skipper

Painted Lady
Caterpillars hatching out of eggs. They will eat the leftover egg case.
Do you see the tiny
caterpillars?
This caterpillar is
getting ready to go into a chrysalis.
These caterpillars are
hanging in a “J” shape. Soon they will shed
their skin for the last time.
A chrysalis (pupa)!
Look how dark these chrysalises
are.
Insects use spiracles (air tubes) to breathe.
The tiny ovals outlined faintly in white
between the broken white lines are the spiracles through which this Painted Lady larva
breathes.
Butterflies have taste sensors on their
legs. This is a close up picture of a taste
sensor on the foot of a butterfly.
