Butterflies have a hard outer skeleton (exoskeleton).

Butterflies have 3 body sections:

Can you find the Head, Thorax, and Abdomen?

Butterflies have wings.

2 forewings (front) and 2 hind wings (back).

The tiny scales attached to butterfly wings give the wings their color.

Butterflies drink with a long straw like tongue called a proboscis.

Caterpillars hatching out of eggs.

They will eat the leftover egg case.

Do you see the tiny caterpillars?

This caterpillar is getting ready to go into a chrysalis.

These caterpillars are hanging in a “J” shape.

Soon they will shed their skin for the last time.

A chrysalis (pupa)!

Look how dark these chrysalises are.
That means they will soon hatch.
Look at the second one.  You can see the wing patterns.

  See a Cabbage butterfly hatch.

Insects use spiracles (air tubes) to breathe.

The tiny ovals outlined faintly in white between the broken white lines are the

spiracles through which this Painted Lady larva breathes.

Butterflies have taste sensors on their legs.
