Plants-Living/Non-living things

Plants are alive just like people.

They are living things.

Living things…

Move

All living things move on the inside.  They move substances from one place to another inside their body.  Some living things also move from place to play by walking, running, swimming, or flying.

**Some non-living things can move, like a car even though it is not living.

Breathe or respiration

Living things trade gases with the environment.  Animals and humans take in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.

Get rid of waste

Living things need to remove waste from their bodies.  If this waste was allowed to remain in the body it could be poisonous.  When humans go to the bathroom or when we breathe out, our body is removing waste.

Grow

Living things grow and change.

When living things feed, it provides energy that helps with growth.

Change and react to things around them

Living things react to things around them.  Animals may hibernate when the weather turns cold.  Humans may cover their ears when a loud sound is heard.

Living things have young

Humans have babies.  Cats have kittens.

Birds lay eggs.

Plants also make seeds which grow into new plants.

Living things need things to live.

Nutrients (food)

Plants make their own food from sunlight.

This is called photosynthesis.
