MPE
is the 2007-08 Roswell’s Environmental School of the Year!
Our
program is underway for the 2008-09 school year. An
outdoor classroom has begun including a planting area for each grade level, a
dry composting area, and possibly a vermin-composting area (worm
composting). If you are
knowledgeable about any of these areas, please contact Ms. Michaud via email
here: Michaud@fultonschools.org. Additionally,
formation of 2 central recycling locations within the school for large items
such as cardboard and plastics is in the works. Ms. Welch’s 5th grade will
collect aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and cardboard from these recycling
stations each week on Friday. If you
have ideas or wish to help, contact any member of the Evergreen School
Committee or Theresa in the front office.
To become an Evergreen
School, it is required to outline a plan for 4 conservation goals to be
achieved during theschool year. We
accomplished these goals in the 2005-2006 school year: ý
Create an official Evergreen School Committee ý
Expand the current recycling programs to include
cardboard ý
Perform a waste audit ý
Perform a beautification day at MPE and try to include
a rain garden In
2007-08 Ms. Welch’s third graders and Ms. Searcy’s talented and gifted
students started a service learning project to expand the recycling program
at MPE. One goal of this project was
to establish a recycling center and continue to recycle items such as paper,
cardboard, plastic bottles, ink cartridges, sneakers, and aluminum cans. See
more below in the links section. |

In
order to keep the grounds around the school looking neat, we have worked with
Hands On Atlanta to perform a beautification day. In the future, we hope to install a rain
garden. This type of garden is planted
so that rain water from the impervious areas of the school drain to it. Instead of the water flowing to the street
gutters, the rain soaks into the soil in the garden.

MPE
continues to monitor Rocky Creek through the Adopt-a-Stream program. David Smith from Ecological Solutions leads
a volunteer group through a sampling event.
Both water quality monitoring and biological assessments are
performed. Since its inception, scout
troops and other volunteer groups have performed the adopt-a-stream
monitoring. Results have been sent to

Paper recycling bins are located in every classroom, office and
work room. Students
and teachers place all refuse paper into those bins. They are collected by volunteers and picked
up by the City of
Paper
recyclables: adding machine tape,

Ink cartridges are donated by families and by the school
and are sent to a recycling center and a fee is given to MPE in return. A collection bin is located in the PTA
office.

Throughout
the school building there are several plastic bins for plastic recyclables
with a number of 1 or 2 PETE. To find
out what number is on your item, look for a triangle. The number in the center determines the
type of plastic. Remove lid (lids are not recyclable) and RINSE
thoroughly. You do not need to remove
the label.
Plastics #3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or any other number other than #1 or #2
are not accepted.

Throughout
the school building there are several plastic bins for cardboard
recyclables. MPE recycles cardboard and
paperboard food containers like cereal boxes, shoe boxes, chipboard, and
brown paper bags.
Corrugated
cardboard like moving boxes should be broken down and flattened. Plans are underway to create a more central
location for these items.

(Sometimes
made of paper with plastic or aluminum coating).
MPE
recycles cardboard and paperboard food containers like cereal boxes, shoe
boxes, chipboard, and brown paper bags.
Rinse
these containers, flatten and put with cardboard recyclables. Plans are underway for a cafeteria
recycling bin to place empty drink boxes, milk cartons, and juice cartons.
