![]() In May of 2007, second grade students at Mountain Park Elementary donated $500 to adopt an American bald eagle and a red-tail hawk from the Roswell Chattahoochee Center. Another group of first and second grade students donated $450 worth of pet supplies to the Southern Humane Society. The students are in the Talented and Gifted program at Mountain Park Elementary School in Roswell . As part of a unit on economics, Ms. Kati Searcy’s students organized companies and sold a product – customized sticky note holders. Before selling the first item, students decided that they wanted any profit they made to help animals. The students themselves chose the recipients of their nearly $1,000 profit. The students assumed the roles of sales persons, accountants, and production staff in the two companies – Wonderful Posties and Stick-A-Note. The students in the Stick-A-Note company were treated to a private tour of the Chattahoochee Nature Center where they had encounters with both the red-tail hawk and the American bald eagle which they have adopted for one year. They learned that the eagle eats two rats a day at a cost of $4.00. The students quickly realized that their $500 donation would feed just that one bird for 125 days!! The students were treated to encounters with other animals including an owl and a beaver. On Sunday, members of the Wonderful Posties company met at Target where, shopping lists and calculators in hand, they loaded five buggies with pet supplies for the Southern Humane Society. They had seen a "wish list" on the society's web page and used that as their guide. The students then traveled to the pet adoption center where they delivered the supplies, toured the facility, and had personal encounters with the animals there. Back to Recognition Index
