Ms. Welch’s 3rd Grade Service Learning

Fast Facts:

·        Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours!

·        Making paper from recycled paper reduces more air pollution by 95%

·        Recycling a stack of newspapers just 3 feet high saves one tree!

 

As part of their unit on pollution, Ms. Welch’s 3rd graders began a recycling service learning project.  The project data will be used to help persuade MPE students, staff, and the community to help implement a full recycling program here at Mountain Park Elementary. 

Last week, Ms. Welch’s 3rd grade students collected information about the items discarded by MPE students at lunch.  The trash was sorted into groups and then weighed.  This is what they discovered about MPE lunch trash.

We threw away 1,605 pounds of food!

·        Some of the food we threw away could be used in a compost pile.

Composting provides a way to reduce the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of and it coverts waste into a product that is useful for gardening, landscaping, or house plants.

 

We threw away 160 pounds of plastic!

·        The plastic we threw away contained enough fiber to make approximately 10,000 t-shirts!

We threw away 20 pounds of metal!

·        The metal we threw away could have saved enough energy for 2580 hours of TV viewing.  That would be like leaving your TV on for 1,075 days straight!!

We threw away 160 pounds of paper!

·        The paper we threw away could have saved approximately 32 trees!

 160 trees!
